Space Analogs is a structuralist meditation on alienation and exploration, drawn from six years ofsolitary journeys filmed across Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Iceland, and the Arctic. Moving through deserts, ice fields, volcanic formations,and landscapes on Earth that resemble extraterrestrial worlds, the film uses first-person cinematography to imagine landscape as an orientationsystem through which Earth becomes a means of encountering other worlds. Hexagonal basalt columns merge into an animated hexagonalwave, which becomes the molecular structure of MDMA, then serotonin, before dissolving into an underwater world in the Silfra Fissure.Against these images, Wang recounts the story of her grandfather, who lived under an assumed identity as a Chinese spy, and her own attractionto the apparent certainty of chemistry, astronomy, and mathematics. Writing developed under the influence of MDMA accompanies the finalmovement of the film, as geometry passes into chemistry and chemistry into the sensing body.
